The Singing Ants were the antagonists of two episodes of Garfield and Friends.
The ants are a band of picnic ants who populate an unnamed park in large numbers, aggressively stealing human food in mass numbers and sometimes violently attacking them when they retaliate. Hence their name they love singing while raiding.
Biography[]
The Picnic Panic[]
Garfield, Odie, and Jon encounter the ants when they become targets of their raid. Garfield falls asleep while the former two jog, causing the ants to empty the entire picnic. Garfield, fearing that he will be blamed for eating the picnic, pursues the ants, but they actually fight back and with united strength, overwhelm him, eventually throwing him over a waterfall in a failed attempt of his to bait them. Jon returns and Garfield is exhausted, and in a show of strength the ants manage to pick him up by the feet and toss him into the lake. Without food the three decide to go home, but Garfield still being hungry temporarily joins the ants to steal food from others.
A Vacation From His Senses[]
The Singing Ants from "The Picnic Panic" reappear in this episode; Jon refers to them as "last season's characters".
Another Ant Episode[]
The ants return in this episode to raid Jon's house. Garfield and Jon attempt to get rid of the ants, but the ants throw them out of the house. Jon calls an exterminator called Mr. Crater. He tries everything from ant repellent sprays to special powders to blasting them with water with a garden hose, none of which work against the ants, much to the dismay of Jon and Garfield. Crater takes drastic measures and pulls out a robot from the back of his truck. He sings another verse, claiming that it is what they need to get rid of the ants once and for all. Crater turns on the power and the robot proceeds toward the house to do its job. Garfield notices that the power is set on low. Having experienced the ants' antics first hand the last time, he turns the switch to full power; he gets his paw caught in the machinery, causing him to go on a speedy and very bumpy ride inside the house. Just as the ants celebrate their victory, the robot blasts into the kitchen using its laser beams. It proceeds to destroy the appliances, shatter the dishes, and knock everything down, causing the ants to flee. This, in turn, causes the destruction of the house and Garfield's paw is eventually freed. He then shuts the machine off. Jon, Garfield, and Odie, who eventually rejoins them, think about the bright future as the ants make a triumphant return from the rubble. They take their leave and declare that they will return for a third ant episode by the time the house is rebuilt.
Physical appearance[]
The ants are colored differently in all of their appearances. They are black in "The Picnic Panic", blue in "A Vacation From His Senses", and brown in "Another Ant Episode".
Personality[]
Despite appearing as standard cartoonish villains the ants are violent and dangerous on the inside, having no hesitance about attacking or even nearly killing whoever disrupts their raids. They do not appear interested in attacking whoever does not provoke them; in fact, in "Another Ant Episode", Odie, who did nothing against the ants, was never attacked by them.
Powers and abilities[]
The ants are small and thus nimble and fast, they are also strong enough to pick up large objects and humans while transporting them at supreme speed. They are also resilient to bug sprays and insect traps, rendering such ineffective.
