The Pet Show

The Pet Show is the twenty-fourth episode from the first season of The Garfield Show.

Synopsis

Garfield has Odie compete in a pet show, going up against Nermal to get the grand prize.

Plot

Garfield is sleeping in the backyard. Nermal shows up and informs him of a pet show that he’s been entered in. Uninterested, Garfield responds by throwing him away in a trash can. However, upon hearing that first prize is 100 pounds of lasagna from Vito, Garfield has second thoughts about the contest, even when Nermal figures that someone like Garfield would simply be laughed at by the judges for not being cute enough.

When he applies for the contest, the judges laugh at him, just as Nermal predicted. However, one of the judges notices Odie and recommends him to the contest. Garfield convinces Odie to enter, promising to share the prize with him if he wins. To make things easier, Garfield manages to get rid of almost all of the competitors by convincing them of a superior lasagna prize on the east side of town. The contest ends up with only Odie and Nermal competing.

The first part of the contest measures cuteness. Odie performs well, though not well enough to outperform Nermal. To change the tide, Garfield scratches a blackboard with his claws to sabotage Nermal (whilst making sure he and Odie have cotton in their ears).

The second part, measuring intelligence, involves finding two matching items from two piles. Nermal picks out a slipper, followed by its mate. Odie also picks out a slipper, but ends up getting every other item in the building before time runs out, despite Garfield’s insistence to get another slipper. When Garfield tries to figure out Odie's lack of success, he is reminded of the cotton from before.

The final part of the contest consists of an obstacle course. Odie falls hopelessly behind, making Nermal the apparent winner. Before he can cross the finish line, Garfield distracts Nermal with a photo-op, allowing Odie to win the contest. Garfield gives Odie a tiny slice of the prize lasagna while he runs off with the rest. However, he is then confronted by the other contestants, who found out that they were tricked. He then offers them the tiny slice, and then continues to run away.
