The Merriam-Webster and Garfield Dictionary is a Garfield licensed dictionary. Along the course of the book, it features around 65,000 definitions, a fraction of which are accompanied with black and white daily comic strips for enhanced learning.
The original edition of the dictionary was published in 1999. A mini-dictionary version, with alternate features, was released in 2002.
The Merriam-Webster and Garfield Dictionary was conceived by Jim Davis, who was inspired by letters he received from parents expressing gratitude for the Garfield comic strip helping their children learn to read. The comic strips featured in the dictionary were chosen by editors from Merriam-Webster, "carefully selected for the ways they illustrate the use of language". Davis and the editors of Merriam-Webster produced the book "in the firm belief that it will serve well those who want an easy-to-read and fun-to-use record of today's English words."
