The announcement of the comic in The Fairmount News.

In December 1962, during the winter break of Jim Davis' senior year of High School, his hometown's local newspaper announced that he would begin contributing a cartoon to his school newspaper (which was titled The Breeze). It is believed that this was Jim Davis' first newspaper comic.

Details on the cartoon are sparse, boiling down essentially to what the article mentions. The comic would apparently be set in a High School setting and would feature two main characters: Herbie and Herman. Herbie would be a freshman, and a "typical greenie," Herman a senior.

No issues of The Breeze from this period are known to exist, with even the title of the comic being a mystery. Around the same time, Davis also created custom art for his school's yearbook, and at least one character (a freshman wearing a propeller hat) appears to be the same described in the Fairmount News article. This would imply that either the Yearbook's art was an extension of the comic featured in The Breeze, or that the original article was confused and was actually talking about Davis' work on his Yearbook.
