The Bluebird of Happiness (FRFlag Chardonneret du bonheur) is the 19thUS/25thEUepisode from the second season of The Garfield Show.

Synopsis[]

It's a normal day for Harry the stray, who thinks he is in for an easy lunch when he sees a lonely little bluebird. He's going in for the kill when Garfield, warned by Odie, stops him and saves the baby bird. He's felt quite protective of the bluebirds ever since he took care of some abandoned eggs who when they hatched, thought he was their mother.

Plot[]

As a quartet of bluebirds fly in the sky, one of them takes a detour and stops in Jon's backyard. Inside, Garfield is chasing Nermal around the house and eventually catches him in the kitchen. Odie watches for a moment before strolling outside and seeing the bluebird in the yard. When he sees Harry standing over it and ready to pounce, Odie becomes panicked and hurries to warn Garfield.

Garfield, meanwhile, was inside about to saw Nermal in half as part of a magic trick. He is interrupted and tackled by Odie, who warns him about the bluebird. Garfield initially shrugs it off, but upon realizing that it is a bluebird that Harry is stalking, he and Odie race outside to intervene, leaving Nermal in the magic box. Garfield rescues the bird from Harry and the alley cat begins chasing him and Odie. The pets hide inside, but Harry soon spots them through the window. He tries to break in, but they had blocked the pet door with the refrigerator, and Harry was defeated, for the moment.

Now safe, Odie asks Garfield why he is so concerned about the bird, and Garfield jogs his memory by playing clips from Mother Garfield, showing him hatching the eggs, caring for them, saving them from Harry, and returning them to their mother. Odie asks if that bird is one of Garfield's babies, and while Garfield is initially doubtful, this is proven wrong when the bird reveals that it is one of Garfield's hatchlings by calling Garfield “mama” and the two embrace. In the living room, Nermal manages to free himself from the magic box and barges into the kitchen to confront Garfield. The fat cat tells Nermal to leave, but the kitten refuses. When Garfield threatens him with another magic trick, Nermal is persuaded and leaves. With the kitten out of his fur, Garfield decides to build a nest for the bird, which delights it.

Harry, meanwhile, is still sulking outside when he sees Nermal leaving the house. He tells Nermal that the bluebird inside might be even cuter than him, which worries the egotistical kitten. Harry offers to give the bird a good home if Nermal can get it outside, and Nermal agrees to do so. Inside, the bird sleeps in its makeshift nest and Garfield and Odie decide to catch some Z's themselves. As they snooze, Nermal grabs the nest and delivers it to Harry, who promptly bags the bird, but Odie overhears this transaction and alerts Garfield. Upon hearing the news, they storm outside to confront Nermal.

Nermal tells them what he did and what Harry said to him about giving the bird a good home, and Garfield replies that Harry is planning to eat him and that he has to stop the alley cat before he does, leaving Odie and Nermal behind. Nermal realizes what he did and is deeply remorseful, but tries to make it right by asking if Odie can track the bird with his powerful nose. While Garfield scours the streets for Harry and the bird, it is Nermal and Odie who find them first. Odie barks a distress call, which gets heard by Garfield, who arrives just as Harry finishes putting Nermal and Odie in a dumpster. Harry makes short work of Garfield as well and is about to devour the bird, when its mother and siblings arrive and drive him away, rescuing it.

Nermal, not forgetting the rotten thing he did, admits as much to Garfield and tells him to mail him to Abu Dhabi as punishment. Garfield agrees, but seeing that Nermal did try to rescue the bird, decides not to mail him to Abu Dhabi, but to Greenland instead. With the kitten dealt with, Garfield and the bluebird nuzzle each other good-bye. Garfield and Odie then watch the bird family fly away.
