Splut Week is an event that Garfield observes. During Splut Week, various things happen which result in the sound "splut" being heard, with at least one splut occurring each day of Splut Week. Unlike a regular week, it appears to only last from Monday to Saturday, as none of the Splut Weeks to date have included any mention of the word "splut" in the weeks' Sunday strips.
Official Splut Week[]
The first and only "official" Splut Week occurred from Monday the 4th of February 1985 to Saturday the 9th of February 1985. It is identified as such when Garfield looks at a calendar and remarks "Yup... it's Splut Week" in the February 4th Monday strip. In this incarnation of Splut Week, the spluts are always targeted at Garfield, and are almost always caused by pies. In the first half of the week, the pies have unexplained origins such as coming from offscreen or from a box which is too small to fit a pie. In the latter half of the week, the pies are thrown by hecklers as Garfield performs on the fence. The February 10th Sunday strip makes no mention of spluts.
This Splut Week is also notable for beginning on the first Monday of February, with Monday being Garfield's least favorite day of the week and February being his least favorite month. This, combined with the fact that Garfield checks a calendar to see if it is Splut Week, seems to suggest that the official start date of Splut Week is the first Monday of February in a given year.
Unofficial Splut Weeks[]
Two other week-long events have occurred which are highly similar to Splut Week, but which are never explicitly identified as being Splut Weeks.
Unofficial Splut Week 1[]
The first unofficial Splut Week took place from Monday the 19th of July 1982 to Saturday the 24th of July 1982, about three years prior to the official Splut Week. Garfield does not identify the week as "Splut Week", simply saying on Monday "It's been a long time since I heard a good "splut"". Like the official Splut Week, the July 25th Sunday strip did not contain any mention of spluts. It is different from the later Splut Weeks in many ways; for one, the targets of the spluts are more widespread. In the later Splut Weeks, Garfield is the primary target of the spluts, but in the 1982 incarnation, the spluts happen to Garfield, Odie, and Jon in a fairly equal amount. Finally, the spluts have pedestrian causes, as they are always caused by Garfield or Odie throwing or hitting something so that it creates a "splut" when it collides with another object.
Unofficial Splut Week 2[]
The second unofficial Splut Week took place from Monday the 12th of October 1987 to Friday the 16th of October 1987, about two and a half years after the official Splut Week. Garfield once again does not identify the week as "Splut Week". Instead, he is reading his horoscope in the October 12th Monday strip and reads that he will be "visited by an old acquaintance" that day. It is more similar to the official Splut Week, in that the spluts are almost always targeted at Garfield and usually come from unlikely or unexplained places. On the October 16th Friday strip, Garfield himself triggers the splut, and it happens to Jon.
Unlike both of the other Splut Weeks, which run from Monday to Saturday, the October 1987 Splut Week only runs from Monday to Friday, as the October 17th Saturday strip and October 18th Sunday strip both make no mention of spluts.
