The story begins in media res, with Garfield and Odie fleeing from the police as fugitives. They end up cornered by the police after reaching a dead end. Before such an incident occurred, Nermal drops by the Arbuckle residence, where he tests his flute. Garfield looks for cheese in the refrigerator, with Jon realizing he is running late for a meeting. He lets Garfield know he had made a banana cream pie for dessert while he is gone, and also tells him that Garfield has been keeping the house free of mice. Squeak enlists Irv to watch the house while he is away, intending to visit his sister’s family, going into town with Jon. Irv is apprehensive of this, as he had not been in charge of anything. Squeak insists to not let his cousin in the house, though he is not worried as he rarely entered the house.

He introduces him to Cecil, his associate, and claim to stay for a few days, something Irv is concerned with. They raid the fridge, to which Irv alerts Garfield to. Garfield attempts to deal with them, only to be pelted by the pie. After being introduced to them by Irv, Garfield lets Ratzo and Cecil in the house so long as they eat whatever Garfield does not want. In response, they decide converse with the mice in the house to make sure they get what they want, though they are intimidated of letting them do so.

Jon happens to return as this happen, and the mice attempt to be hidden upon being alerted on by Garfield. Cecil sabotages Jon’s groceries, resulting in him seeing three mice that he ends up noticing. He orders Garfield to catch them or go on a raisin and tofu diet for the rest of his life, which is something Garfield opposes.
