Paramount Global (doing business as Paramount, formerly known as ViacomCBS) is an American mass media and entertainment conglomerate headquartered in New York City, and the current owner of the Garfield franchise. Established on December 4, 2019, the company was formed from the re-merger of the second iteration of Viacom and CBS Corporation, which were split from the original iteration of Viacom in 2005.
Ownership of Garfield franchise[]
On August 6, 2019, Paramount Global (then Viacom) bought Paws Incorporated, giving Viacom the rights to the Garfield intellectual property. A new Garfield series to air on Nickelodeon was subsequently announced.[1] As part of the deal, Viacom acquired all licensing contracts, productions, characters, and trademarks related to the Garfield franchise, with the exception of the live action and direct-to-video Garfield movies. Rights to the live action movies are owned by Walt Disney Studios through its 20th Century Studios division. Sony Pictures Entertainment has had the film rights to Garfield since 2016; distribution rights to the 2024 fully CGI movie and possible future sequels are handled by Sony Pictures through Columbia Pictures. The purchase also did not include rights to the Garfield comic strip, which were instead transferred by Jim Davis to a new company created for that purpose, Funny, LLC.
