Garfield and Friends is an American animated television series based on the comic strip Garfield by Jim Davis. The show was produced by Film Roman, in association with United Feature Syndicate and Paws, Inc., and ran on CBS Saturday mornings from 1988 to 1994. Reruns of the show continued until October 7, 1995.
The series featured segments based on Garfield and U.S. Acres, a lesser-known comic strip also created by Davis. The latter was retitled Orson's Farm for foreign syndication as well as the DVD releases. The original logo was retained in the 9 Story Media Group version.
242 Garfield segments and 121 U.S. Acres segments were produced. There were two "Garfield" segments on each show, two "quickie" shorts based on Sunday comic strips, and in between was a U.S. Acres segment.
A total of 121 half-hour shows were produced. All were released in the U.S. on five DVD sets by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment from 2004 to 2005. 9 Story Media Group is remastering the series for High-definition. Since 9 Story could not get in touch with the original film masters and the VHS master was too low to upscale, a full restoration could not be done. As a result, the intro was reanimated in Flash, some special effects were affected and some animation frames are missing.
The first season aired in a half-hour format. In the second season, it switched to an hour-length format, showing two new episodes each week. In the show's last season, the second half-hour of the show featured either an episode from the previous season or one of the Garfield TV specials.
In early 1992, Garfield and Friends was described as "the second-ranked Saturday morning network cartoon (CBS) behind Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (also CBS)."[1]
The series has been acquired by Viacom, as part of the company's purchase of the franchise.[2]Starting with Garfield: The Movie which released on June 11, 2004, Garfield movies were released throughout the years with Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties (June 16, 2006), Garfield Gets Real (August 9, 2007), Garfield's Fun Fest (August 5, 2008) and Garfield's Pet Force (June 16, 2009) later being released. The Garfield Movie is currently being made.

The Garfield Show (Fr. Garfield et Cie) is a French/American CGI animated television series that premiered in France on France 3 on December 22, 2008. English-language episodes started airing on Boomerang UK on May 4, 2009. Following a Halloween sneak preview, it premiered in the United States on Cartoon Network on November 2, 2009 at 10:00am.
The Garfield Show is mainly about Garfield's usual antics and frolics, usually in function of his laziness and gluttony. It focuses on his quirky misadventures (more bizarre ones than from previous incarnations), while always highlighting the fat cat's love for lasagna. Garfield lives with his owner, Jon Arbuckle, and his owner's dog, Odie, in a detached two story house (as opposed to the one story house in the comics and other animated appearances). Often Garfield has to solve problems that he himself causes, yet always tries to skive off, and actually solves them in the end. The only absent comic strip characters are Irma (aside from a depiction in "The Caped Avenger Rides Again!"), Grandma Arbuckle, and Binky the Clown.
Much like the original series, Garfield began breaking the fourth wall more often as the series progressed, such as asking for the script for the episode, talking to the audience, behind-the-scenes drama, and mentioning cartoon traditions, such as instant healing. One difference from the original series, is that the series also started gaining continuity plots and story arcs. Morals and songs were occasionally added to the stories as well.
The show's official synopsis is "Garfield is a lazy, selfish, overweight, orange tabby cat whose main hobbies are chilling out, sleeping, watching TV, eating pizza and having fun... but yet he has a heart of gold and if at first he shows his usual self centered side, thanks to his engenuity he manages to save the day and gets even Odie out of trouble."
