Jackie Melman is a waiter and former entertainer.
He once had an act with a cat named Buddy, which involved vaudeville dancing, as well as stunts such as a flaming hoop (called The Hoop of Doom), juggling pins, and acrobats. Although not popular, it did attract the attention of Jon Arbuckle, a rare fan, and television personality Ed Solomon, who booked Jackie on his show. Due to Buddy quitting the act, and his lack of solo success, Garfield filled in as Jackie's cat.
Despite Garfield's refusal to perform any stunts, Jackie gets laughs from the audience, and he dumps Garfield from the act. His new career apparently did not last long, as he later became a waiter for a restaurant.
