Irwin is the absent-minded friend of Floyd. For a while, he desired to be a cat (believing that anyone can be anything they want to be, even if it meant changing species).
He technically got his wish when Garfield made him an honorary cat. When things got out of hand with this new position, Garfield set things straight by "becoming" a dog.
