Synopsis[]

It's the holiday season for Garfield and the whole gang. Jon has invited not only his parents and Doc Boy, but Liz's family as well, and so Garfield must be on his best behavior. But when Garfield runs into Arlene while she is gathering up food and blankets for the unwanted animals of the neighborhood,

Plot[]

It is nearly Christmas. Jon and Odie are decorating the tree while Garfield sits and watches. Jon checks his watch and realizes it is time to go to the store, leaving Garfield and Odie to decorate the tree. Garfield makes Odie drag the ornaments in front of his chair, and then pulls a lever that catapults the ornaments onto the tree. Jon runs in and tells them that it is time to go to the store, and forget the ornaments.

Jon brings his pets along with him to the store. While Jon is inside shopping, Garfield runs into Arlene, who is carrying blankets and a small sack of food. She tells him that they are for some abandoned animals under the railway station. Garfield proceeds to tell her about his plans, mostly eating and unwrapping gifts. Arlene is not impressed by this, leaves, and questions whether or not Garfield knows the spirit of Christmas. When he guesses that it is about eating and opening presents, Arlene elaborates that there is more. He still does not understand, so she offers him an invitation to join her in helping out her abandoned friends. Before Garfield can answer, Jon races back to his car and tells his pets to return. Garfield hastily bids Arlene a Merry Christmas and races back to the car.

When Garfield reaches the car, Odie glares at him angrily. On the way back, Garfield sees Arlene walking on the sidewalk from the car window. After getting home, Garfield laments not helping Arlene, but he wonders what he can do. Odie gives him a sarcastic response, which irritates him and prompts him to do something.

Meanwhile, Harry and the other strays try to survive under the railway station in the frigid late December temperatures. Arlene arrives with the blankets and food. After realizing that there is not enough for all of them, Harry directs his anger toward Garfield and his unwillingness to share. After his rant, Garfield and Odie walk up behind Arlene with blankets and leftovers from their fridge. Arlene gives each of the pets a kiss and introduces them to the other animals: an old dog named Rags, three orphaned kittens named Spring, Summer, and Autumn, (whom Rags promised to protect following the death of their mother) and an argumentative canary called Nick.

Garfield thanks Arlene for the invitation, and she reveals her desire to give all of the abandoned animals homes. Odie overhears this and thinks about how to get them adopted; he soon comes up with an idea. He explains it to Garfield by drawing a picture of a Christmas tree in the dirt. Garfield understands that Odie wants to build a Christmas tree in the junkyard to attract people who might adopt the animals. Although Odie worries about whether it will work, Garfield thinks the idea is brilliant and tells him as much. The other animals gather around them and the episode closes.
