Heir Apparent (FRFlag Chacun chez soi) is the 38thUS/39thEU episode from the first season of The Garfield Show.

Synopsis[]

Jon Arbuckle and Doc Boy Arbuckle's distant cousin, Ichabod, has recently passed away and left a huge fortune. Either Jon or Doc Boy can secure the fortune on one condition: they must spend the night within Ichabod's haunted manor.

Plot[]

Driving up towards a gloomy mansion surrounded by fog, Garfield reveals that Jon's distant cousin, Ichabod, has recently passed away and has apparently left Jon something within his will. Jon and his pets are greeted by Mr. Connors, the attorney representing the estate. Mr Connors reveals that Doc Boy has arrived already. During the reading of the will, Jon and Doc Boy both realize they've never met Ichabod. Mr Connors reveals that Ichabod left a will in the form of a DVD, and from the television, Ichabod indirectly addresses the brothers. He reveals that as he never met either one, he has come up with a trial to see who is most-deserved: whoever is able to spend the longest time in his supposedly-haunted manor, will get the prize.

Jon, his pets, and Doc Boy are all tense with the situation, and consider if maybe Cousin Ichabod is playing a trick, something he was associated with. After showing them to their quarters, Mr. Connors reveals he refuses to spend a night in the mansion, and runs out in terror. As a storm begins, unintentionally brought on by Jon, they agree that Garfield and Jon will share a room, and Odie and Doc Boy will share another. Jon tells Garfield that he'll have to explore the house himself if he's hungry, which Garfield tasks himself to do, still anxious. Meanwhile, Doc Boy bars up his bedroom with all the furniture inside for safety. Just as he lies down on the bed, however, he finds a ghoulish creature lying down next to him, and in terror, immediately removes the barricade.

Now downstairs, Garfield finds that a suit of armor has been following him, and following his every move. After tricking the armor and escaping, Garfield is chased by a swarm of bats, concurrently with the ghoul chasing Doc Boy and Odie. Jon decides to exit his room to find Odie, but each door he opens presents a Frankenstein-like monster, which begin to pursue him. Garfield finds a cape on the entrance hall's coat rack, and pretending to be a vampire, beguiles the bats into leaving the house through the chimney. Meanwhile Doc Boy evades the ghoul by hiding behind a taxidermied boar's head, while Odie, bumping into Garfield, causes the ghoul to chase after both. Jon eventually finds Doc Boy downstairs, and brings along the Frankenstein monsters. Garfield and Odie attempt to scare to scare the ghoul by using a dust sheet to act as a ghost, which works until the sheet catches the edge of a chandelier.

Initially unsure of what to do, Garfield finds another suit of armor, which like the one before, follows his every move. With a scheme in mind, Garfield uses the suit to punch the ghoul, who flies into the Frankenstein monsters, ending the the charade. Garfield reveals he has figured out that all the monsters they encountered have been robots, except for the ghoul, who turns out to be Cousin Ichabod in disguise. Ichabod reveals neither Jon nor Doc Boy is entitled to the will on account of their perceived cowardice, and he mocks them for it. Garfield, unamused, uses the suit of armor to kick him. Although Odie asks Garfield if the exercise was a waste of time, Garfield reveals he gets one thing out of it: the suit of armor to massage his back.
