Glenda and Odessa (FRFlag Charivari) is the 26thUS/EU episode from the first season of The Garfield Show.

Synopsis[]

Garfield and Odie are falsely accused of having stolen their neighbor's barbecued ribs, and using Drusilla and Minerva's game of dress-up, plan to use their new-found personas, "Glenda" and "Odessa", to find the culprits.

Plot[]

While resting on the couch, Garfield overhears Jon arrive home with guests. Garfield is initially inattentive and unbothered until he finds out that the guests are Drusilla and Minerva, Jon's twin cousins who particularly enjoy dressing animals up. Garfield and Odie leave the house to avoid the twins, and end up at the lakeside. Realizing they can't return home, Garfield suggests that they go take the ribs their neighbor is barbecuing. Meanwhile, as the neighbor leaves the grill to get barbecue sauce, Harry, Rottweiler, and Hercules all enter the backyard to steal the ribs. After each one declares their intentions, Harry suggests that they rather split the ribs between them, and all agreeing to it, they leave.

As Garfield and Odie arrive at the neighbor's house, the neighbor spots and accuses them of stealing the ribs. After Garfield and Odie flee, the neighbor remains determined to catch them and calls animal control. He provides Al, the local animal control officer, a description of Garfield and Odie, and by chance, Al happens to spot the two approaching. Using his net, he catches Garfield. Odie, however, bites Al's leg, allowing Garfield to escape, and both the dog and cat make their way to the city park with Al following behind. Garfield comes up with a plan to throw Al off: he breaks off a flower that resembles his tail and sticks it into a beehive. The plan works when Al dislodges the flower and the bees chase after him, allowing Garfield and Odie to return home.

Garfield realizes that unless he can prove his innocence, their neighbor will continue to search for them. Upon entering the house, they're immediately confronted by the twins who take them upstairs to play dress-up. They dress Garfield up in a pink dress with brown curls, and Odie in a black dress and beehive; The two animals seeing their chance, again, leave the Drusilla and Minerva, and the house. After they find that Al doesn't recognize them, Garfield figures that they can use their disguises to find out who stole the ribs. Nermal appears, and falling for their disguises, attempts to flirt with them. Garfield dubs their personas, "Glenda" and "Odessa". In passing, Nermal suggests they avoid the railroad yard as Harry, Hercules, and Rottweiler are eating barbecued ribs there, revealing the culprits.

Garfield and Odie plan to confront the trio using "Glenda" and "Odessa". Initially, it works until "Glenda" trips and the wig falls off. Just before Harry, Rottweiler, and Hercules can beat Garfield and Odie up for spying on them, Al arrives in time to capture the miscreants. Al declares that Garfield and Odie are cleared of stealing the ribs and leaves. Nermal reveals himself as having called Al when he noticed "Glenda" and "Odessa" heading for the railroad, and suggests that "Glenda" repay him with a kiss. Garfield, disgusted, tells him to close his eyes and uses Odie's tongue on Nermal's lips. As "Glenda" and "Odessa" head home, Nermal chuckles at the thought that "Glenda" is almost as fat as Garfield.

Trivia[]

  • This is the first time Al is seen without Pete.
  • Convenient to the plot, the orange flowers from the park's plants are identical to Garfield's tail.
  • Clips of this episode would later be seen in Which Witch.
  • Odie's 'Odessa' disguise, with the up-do, heels, sunglasses, pearls, and the black dress and gloves, is strikingly similar to the glamorous signature look of Audrey Hepburn's character in the 1961 movie 'Breakfast at Tiffany's'.
