Garfield Quickie
Wade looks at the U.S

Wade looks at the logo for the U.S. Acres Quickie that appeared in episode 44.

Garfield Quickies and U.S. Acres Quickies are a series of short interstitials featured on Garfield and Friends. Typically running for 30 seconds, each Quickie was adapted from an installment of the Garfield and U.S. Acres newspaper comics (usually a Sunday strip), although some of the U.S. Acres Quickies made after the strip ended would instead feature original gags.

In the first three seasons, Garfield and Friends episodes typically included at least three Quickies, with a Garfield Quickie appearing at the beginning of the episode, and the second Garfield Quickie (or, in the second and third seasons, Screaming With Binky) and the U.S. Acres Quickie typically bookending the U.S. Acres segment. After the third season, the U.S. Acres Quickies were dropped (not counting one used as the ending for "Moo Cow Mutt"), with the Quickies eventually reduced to one per episode.

In the series' syndication package, the episodes are edited to have only one Quickie appearing at the end of the episode. Although the international prints used on 20th Century Fox's volumed DVD sets were closer to the episodes' original CBS broadcasts, at least three Quickies were missing from them (all of which were included in the syndication package).

In the Arabic dub, no U.S. Acres/Orson's Farm Quickies are featured due to "international laws against talking pigs". The remaining Quickies use the Season 1 credits background.[1]

NOTE: The Quickies listed in bold below are based off of weekday strips.

Characters[]

Garfield and Friends Quickies are typically centered around Garfield himself. Jon and Odie are often co-stars with Garfield. However, sometimes a supporting character (or sometimes multiple characters) are shown along with any one of the main three.

Garfield[]

There was a total of 151 Quickies during this show's run time. Garfield appeared in 150 of them, the most by far. Garfield is typically the main star of the Quickies, or at the very least, a co-star with Jon, and/or Odie, and/or a different character. Rather than list all 150 of the Quickies Garfield has appeared in, it is easier to show the ONE that he missed, leaving Odie with a leading role. Everything else has Garfield in it in one way or another.

Jon[]

Jon appeared in 107 Quickies, the second most only behind the titular cat. His roles can vary dramatically, though he is often a victim of Garfield's pranks, jokes, and various antics. At times, he co-stars with Garfield and/or Odie, other times all he gets is one line, and occasionally he is heard and not seen.

He is often co-starring with Garfield (usually at the pup's expense, but Odie has pulled one over on his feline friend a handful of times) and/or Jon, and he does have a couple of Quickies where he stars alone, but other times, he is just a background character.

Other Animals/Characters[]

Sometimes other characters or animals outside of the main trio contribute to the Quickies. Random side characters have appeared in 31 Quickies. Some of them are mainstays in the comics and TV shows, like Liz, Nermal, or mice, while others appear once and never show up again in any form of media, be it the comics or TV shows.

Humans[]

Human people have often played parts in Quickies. Most of them are generic, unnamed people, except for Liz.

Liz[]

Outside of Jon, Liz is one of the most recognizable human characters in the strip. Even though she was at best a semi-regular in the strip at the time, and nowhere nearly as much as a mainstay as she has been since she and Jon got together in 2006, she still made a handful of appearances in the show itself and comic strip. Despite this, she only appeared once in a Quickie, and that was when Jon and Garfield had to go to the vet after an eating competition went south.

  • 31. Food Fun (Side character: Liz)
Random humans[]

The majority of people are random, no-named humans that only appear once and never again.

  • 15. Party (Side characters: Jon's random party guests)
  • 23. Snow (Side characters: Snowball-throwing boys)
  • 35: Zoo (Side characters: Zoo patrons and Lion)
  • 53. Snow is Cute (Side characters: Nermal and Neighbor Kids [The neighbor kids had a speaking cameo])
  • 76. Life of the Party (Side characters: Random Partygoers)
  • 98. Get Down! (Side character: Jon's date)
  • 107. Wig (Side character: Bald man)
  • 148. Play in Mud! (Side character: Jon's date)

Animals[]

Garfield interacting with other animals outside of Odie is quite common in the Quickie. Birds and mice are frequent, while Nermal has showed up a couple of times.

Nermal[]

The self-proclaimed world's cutest kitten is the most recognizable animal character outside of Garfield and Odie. He did show up in a handful of week-long series before, and made semi-regular occurrences in the show, but was not shown often in Quickies. He appeared twice, with only one speaking role.

  • 36. Country Club (Side character: Nermal [non-speaking])
  • 53. Snow is Cute (Side characters: Nermal and Neighbor Kids)
Birds[]

Birds are a running gag in the strip. Often, Garfield attempts to capture and eat them, and has gone about doing this in a variety of different ways in the Quickies. However, whether he's getting wallpaper plastered on his face or getting his tummy tickled while in a tree, Garfield never seems to get a fine feathered feast. If anything, he gets injured or humiliated in the process.

  • 18. Bird (Side characters: Yellow birds and Large bird)
  • 28. Birdhouse (Side characters: Brett and Mona Birds)
  • 101. Fall from a Tree (Side characters: Baby birds and Tickling bird)
  • 102. Bird Calls (Side characters: Birds)
  • 113. Timeshare (Side characters: Timesharing Birds and Mice)
  • 139. Cement (Side character: Super-strong bird)
  • 144. Fall from a Tree 2 (Side characters: Baby birds and Tickling bird)
Mice[]

Mice have been recurring characters in the strip since the extremely early days. They made occurrences in the show often as well, namely one mouse named Floyd, who appeared at least once in every season. They have also appeared a handful of times in Quickies as well, being used as balloons or as a subject of Garfield's anger, though Loretta won't let Garfield beat up her little brother.

  • 73. Swiss Cheese (Side character: Mouse)
  • 87. Loretta (Side characters: Loretta Mouse and her Little brother)
  • 113. Timeshare (Side characters: Timesharing Birds and Mice)
  • 137. Rodent Rebellion (Side characters: Mice, Squirrels, and Armadillos)
Pooky[]

Garfield's teddy bear Pooky is another recurring character in the strip. He was not shown much in the show, but he did make one appearance in a Quickie.

  • 51. Nailed into Bed (Side character: Pooky)
Unnamed Dogs[]

Garfield tormenting dogs (or vice versa) is another running gag in the strip. In the Quickies, one dog almost swallowed Garfield, and Garfield tested out a dog whistle on a poor pooch.

  • 13. Fetch (Side character: Large Dog)
  • 131. Dog Whistle (Side character: Dog)
The Bugs and the Bees[]

Random insects and other bugs have shown up a couple of times in Quickies, albeit infrequently.

  • 2. Spider (Side character: Spider)
  • 3. Bees (Side characters: Bees)
  • 81. House Flies (Side character: Fly)
Weird, Wacky, and Wild[]

Sometimes, the most random of things can make one-time characters for Quickies.

  • 82. Who Are You? (Side character: Monster)
  • 92. Alarm Clock (Side characters: Alarm clocks)
  • 120. Sand Person (Side characters: the Sand Person and Charley)
  • 135, Two Self (Side character: Garfield's reflection)
Deadly and Dangerous[]

Ferocious beasts have been present in a couple of Quickies. There is a bear in one episode, and a lion in another.

  • 35: Zoo (Side characters: Zoo patrons and Lion)
  • 75. Survival (Side character: Bear [cameo])

Repurposed Comics[]

Most Quickies are based upon Sunday strips from their respective comics, be it Garfield or U.S. Acres. A handful of them, however, are based upon weekday strips. As for Garfield's Quickies, they range from as early as 1978 (the earliest coming from a strip that's older than Odie himself) and as late as 1993.

The Good Ol' Days (1978-1984)[]

The first seven years of Garfield's existence (or, six and a half, since he was born near the midpoint of 1978) did not contribute much in the Quickie landscape. These seven years combined had 14 Quickies based off of their strips. For comparison, these seven years combined had fewer strips than any of the top-6 years individually.

1978[]

Garfield's birth year contributed two strips to be used as Quickies, including the oldest of them all. Quickies from this year showed Garfield getting slammed by a screen door and him acting like a dog to get a slice of ham.

  • Year: 1978
  • Number of Quickies: 2
  • Rank: Tied for 11th most, barely better than last place
Quickie Numbers and Names, and Their Comics' Dates[]
  • 4. Screen Door (August 6)
  • 19. Dogs (September 24)

1979[]

1979 had only one strip being reused as a Quickie. This one had Garfield tossing sweat socks into his mouth after he thought that they were a crescent roll.

  • Year: 1979
  • Number of Quickies: 1
  • Rank: Tied for 14th most if one were to count 1980, or just dead last among years represented
Quickie Numbers and Names, and Their Comics' Dates[]
  • 10. Crescent Roll (July 8)

1980[]

Strangely enough, a grand total of zero Quickies were made from 1980 strips. If one were to consider this year, this would easily be the smallest number of strips used from any particular year from the Quickie time frame, 1978-'93.

  • Year: 1980
  • Number of Quickies: 0
  • Rank: Dead last, unless one were to ignore it since it has no representation.

1981[]

Two strips from 1981 were taken and reused as Quickies. Oddly enough, both of them debuted in Season 2 rather than Season 1. Among them are Jon getting mad at Garfield for eating, scratching, and destroying everything in sight and Garfield and Jon fighting for the right to sit in a chair.

  • Year: 1981
  • Number of Quickies: 2
  • Rank: Tied for 11th most, barely better than last place
Quickie Numbers and Names, and Their Comics' Dates[]
  • 43. The Right to Be a Cat (January 11)
  • 52. It's My Chair! (March 1)

1982[]

1982 produced two comics to be reused as Quickies. Much like 1981, '82 had both of its Quickies debut in Season 2 rather than Season 1. These Quickies involve Odie and Garfield engaging a Bark vs. Meow contest and Garfield performing on the fence and getting pelted with things.

  • Year: 1982
  • Number of Quickies: 2
  • Rank: Tied for 11th most, barely better than last place
Quickie Numbers and Names, and Their Comics' Dates[]
  • 41. The Contest (September 19)
  • 32. On the Fence (December 26)

1983[]

1983 produced double the output of either of its two prior years. That said, it only had four strips turned Quickies. However, for the first time, these Quickies are not all concentrated in one particular season. Seasons 1 and 2 had at last one Quickie from a 1983 strip. Among these are Jon giving his pets a fire drill, Garfield killing a daisy by telling it to die, and Jon going on a date...without pants.

  • Year: 1983
  • Number of Quickies: 4
  • Rank: 8th most

  • 35. Zoo (January 16)
  • 44. Date (July 31)
  • 46. Daisy (August 14)
  • 14. Fire (September 4)

1984[]

The last of the early years, 1984, featured only three different strips get reused as Quickies. These include Jon bundling up his pets for a day in the snow, Garfield stomping Odie after finding the pup sleeping in his bed, and Odie locking his friends out of the car in the rain during a camping trip.

  • Year: 1984
  • Number of Quickies: 3

Quickie Numbers and Names, and Their Comics' Dates[]
  • 48. Play in the Snow (March 4)
  • 11. Someone in My Bed (May 6)
  • 17. Camping (September 2)

The Golden Age (1985-1991)[]

These seven years contributed a large majority of the Quickies. These seven years had a whopping 133 Quickies based upon their strips. The smallest of these, 1985, had 12 while the greatest of these, 1989, had an astounding 33, possibly a bit of recency bias since the show was launched in 1988.

1985[]

1985 was the first year to feature double-digit strips reused as Quickies. This year had 12 strips spanning three different seasons: 1, 2, and 4. Half of them came from Season 1 alone. Among them feature Garfield learning how to use Jon's credit card, Garfield appearing everywhere at once in front of Jon, and a rubber hole causing a prank on Odie to go wrong.

  • 6. Food Ceiling (December 15)

1986[]

This year had 15 strips reused as Quickies, and oddly enough all of them happened within the first two seasons. A couple of them from Season 1 include Garfield and Odie using Jon's chair to break the door down and Garfield locking Jon out of the house. Season 2 has Garfield fleeing from a ball of twine and the cat spouting water on Jon's face to wake him up.

1987[]

Of all the 1987 strips, 17 Quickies were based off of them, spanning five different seasons: 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7. Season 1 saw Garfield playing with snow and teasing Odie for his doggy coat (the first Quickie ever). Season 2 had Garfield playing charades with Jon. In Season 3, Odie rolled over and over and away. In Season 5, Garfield smacked Jon in the face with jogging shoes, and in the final season, Garfield sleepwalked and sleep-kicked Odie.

1988[]

1988 had a whopping 22 Quickies from its strips, earning itself the silver medal in the quantity department. Its strips also span five different seasons, tying it with it's predecessor, 1987, for the most seasons with its strips. This year showed Garfield driving Jon crazy, the pets putting on a show for Jon, Garfield running into a giant alarm clock, Garfield tricking Odie into running in his sleep, and the cat learning the effects of Monday gravity.

1989[]

1989 is far and away the most represented year in the Quickie landscape. This year had a whopping 33 Quickies based off its strips. For reference, this is 50% more than second place, 1988, which had 22. Of these 33 Quickies, 19 of them were shown in Season 3. This is the highest concentration of any given year in any given season. Second place is Season 6, which had 11 Quickies from 1991 strips. Among these quickies from 1989 strips, Garfield goes surfing on an ironing board, gets out of a tree with Odie's help, tries using various bird calls, and watches a bird lift a block of cement.

1990

1990: Garfield laughs as a bird starts poking his ticklish tummy.

1990[]

1990 had 16 Quickies based off its strips. Some of them, however, were duplicates of each other. Most of them were shown in Season 7, oddly enough. Some of these Quickies involve Odie doing an impression of a famous mouse, Jon trying to get Garfield off of his lap, and Garfield making a snowman with Odie's inadvertent help.

1991[]

This year had more Quickies than its predecessor, even despite 1990's duplicates. 1991 had 18 Quickies, and all of them were shown in seasons 5 and 6. Among them show Garfield rolling a giant snowball into Jon, the cat's coffee kicking in, Garfield and Odie engaging in a hairdryer fight, and Jon giving a speech to the United Nations.

The Steep Drop (1992-1993)[]

As the show began to draw to a close, the amount of Quickies from more recent years would also plummet. 1992 and '93 had only four Quickies between them. This makes sense, as these years had less time to contribute (the show ended in 1994 after all), but considering that past seasons had Quickies from strips that launched earlier in their respective years, it may have been possible that 1992 and '93 could've been used more.

1992

1992: Garfield wakes up Jon by giving him a kiss on the cheek.

1992[]

1992 had only three strips reused in Quickie format. Among them showed Garfield waking up Jon by bungeeing, Jon and his pets playing in mud, and Garfield's reflection looking through the mirror at him.

  • Year: 1992
  • Number of Quickies: 3
  • Rank: Tied for 9th most

1993

1993: Garfield and Odie line up to race.

1993[]

This was the last full year before the series ended, and also one of the least represented. It does have the honor of having the most recent strip, so there's that. There was only one Quickie from this year's strips, and that featured Garfield and Odie engaging in a race into the wall.

  • Year: 1993
  • Number of Quickies: 1
  • Rank: Tied for 14th most
Quickie Numbers and Names, and Their Comics' Dates[]
  • 136. Run into the Wall Contest (September 8)
