Overview

This is a page that goes in depth on the Quickies from the second season of Garfield and Friends.

The second season is the biggest in terms of volume and episodes. In total, there are 37 Garfield Quickies and 23 U.S. Acres Quickies in the second season, by far the most. Most of them are based off of Sunday strips from their respective comics. While they stay true to the original comics and tell the same story, there are often a few minor changes, like added/altered/subtracted dialogue or an added/removed scene.

Trivia[]

Characters[]

Garfield, Jon, and Odie are mainstays in the Quickies, while other unnamed characters/animals have also shown up from time to time.

Garfield[]

Garfield appeared in all 42 Quickies this season, the only character to do so. He is often--if not always--the main character. This season involves a handful of pranks/schemes from the cat, (like putting a birdhouse on his head to catch some birds or spouting water on Jon's face to wake him up) but also a handful of his less proud moments, like getting pranked by Jon and getting stuck in Venetian blinds.

Jon[]

Jon appeared in 36 of the 42 Quickies and had a speaking cameo in one more. This is the second-most appearances by one character behind only his famous fat feline. He is often the victim of Garfield's various antics, like getting hit with a wave and being robbed of cookies.

The earliest of these reused comics came from January 1981, and the latest also was the last Quickie, from July 1989. 1988 was the year used the most, as ten Quickies were based on strips from that year. 1986 was a close second, with nine strips from that year making appearances. Of all the years to be used, 1981 and '84 were the years used the least, with only few strips from those years being reused.

Charades: Garfield looks down and sees Jon standing in his food.

Charades[]

  • Quickie Name: Charades
  • Quickie Number: 25
  • Original Strip: 1/25/1987
  • Description: Garfield tries to tell Jon something, and uses charades to do so. He points at Jon, he soon translates as "You're...". For the second word, Garfield grabs his leg and points at his foot. Jon figures out that it's "Standing in..." The third word has Garfield pointing at his eye and then wiggling his ear. After listing words that rhyme with "eye", Jon guesses "my", and Garfield confirms by nodding. The fourth word has Garfield pointing at his open mouth. Jon quickly guesses "food" and then puts the sentence together: "You're standing in my food." Jon celebrates, only for it to be revealed that he actually was standing in Garfield's food, much to the cat's frustration. Jon doesn't notice and gives Garfield a 5-word movie title for him to guess.
  • Tweaks:
    • Much of this Quickie remains true to the strip, with a few minor changes.
      • Garfield points at his raised leg instead of his other leg in the Quickie.
      • He points at his eye instead of gesturing at himself to get Jon to get "my".
Asleep: Jon plays a practical joke on Garfield.

  • Quickie Number: 26
  • Original Strip: 2/23/1986

  • Tweaks:
    • Jon's in his normal clothes instead of his pajamas.
    • He says "Good Morning Garfield" in a evil grinning way.
    • The shorts are red-and-white striped instead of green and yellow, as well as green added to the blue tennis shoes.
  • Subtractions:
    • Garfield's "Morning." is cut out, as he just groans when he wakes up.
  • Note: This is one of few quickies that was not released on the DVDs.
Muscles: Garfield flexes his fat into huge muscles.

  • Additions:
    • Jon tells Garfield, "I'm in primo shape!", something he doesn't say in the comic.
  • Tweaks:
    • Jon's first few lines are changed from questions to statements, and there are a few minor changes:

  • Original Strip: 11/23/1986
  • Description: One stormy day, Jon is inside reading a newspaper when he hears a knock at the door. He answers it and his pets bound in, soaking wet from the rain, much to Jon's horror. Garfield and Odie race to the chair, but Jon shoos them off, telling them to dry off. He returns to the chair, and the pets comply by jumping on the arms of the chair and shaking themselves all over Jon, drenching him. He gets up and runs away, slips on a puddle and flies outside, the door closing behind him. He cries for help, and Garfield tells Odie that Jon's too proud to let them see him cry.
  • Additions:
    • Jon tells his pets to dry off, something he doesn't do in the strip,
    • Jon also returns to read his paper.

    • He also gets stuck outside in the rain instead of crying under his bed.

Mona and Brett Bird arrive and decide to make themselves at home, and they do so by decorating the inside of the birdhouse...with "a little paint and wallpaper", much to Garfield's surprise. Once the fat cat returns inside, he passes by Jon, who is sipping coffee. The cat's face is covered with paste and a piece of wallpaper, and he simply states that it's a long story.
  • Tweaks:
    • The birds' color scheme is slightly changed, from sky blue with pink bellies to a periwinkle blue body and pink and blue tail feathers and eyelids for Mona and Brett respectively.
    • The birdhouse is also a different color--yellow with a red roof compared to pink with a gray roof.
    • The petals on the floral wallpaper are green instead of purple.
  • Subtractions:
    • Jon's "Wha...?" line is cut. Otherwise, the entire dialogue is exactly the same as the strip upon which it's based.

He decides to find out by doing just that. The machine shakes and a giant can of soda drops on top of Garfield.
  • Additions:
