The episode starts of with Garfield misbehaving around the house. Kicking Odie off the table, eating Jon's lunch, and shredding the new drapes. However Jon makes a video of Garfield puts it on a disc and mails it. Jon then says to Garfield that he mailed it to Dr. Whipple much to Garfield's horror.

Whipple shows everyone that his training has made Kittykins a well-behaved cat. Just as Garfield hopes that Jon won't make him take the course, a nurse arrives to take Garfield to Dr. Whipple for personal training.
   
 
At the studio, Dr. Whipple begins his training on Garfield. First, he puts Garfield in a sound room, strapping him to a chair, and makes him listens to random cat orders. Next, he tests Garfield with a robot dog that pushes him of the table every time he pushes it off the table; Garfield keeps it up until the robot breaks. Finally, he tests him on taking the right food; on one side of the table there is Whipple's food, on the other is catfood. Whenever Garfield reaches the human food, a safe drops on him. Despite the consequence, Garfield is relentless in trying to get to Whipple's food.
Latter on they are all watching T.V. Garfield suggests watching a really mindless game show featuring people dressed as large chickens. But Jon says he doesn't care about what he want's to watch a say they're going to watch Dr. Whipple. As they watch they see that Dr. Whipple specializes in training cats that misbehave. He shows his latest patient a cat named kittigins who chases birds. Whipple shows everyone that his training has made kittigins a well behaved cat.Then he say that everyone can buy his training videos to learn how to behave their cats.Back at home Jon says to Garfield that he's not going to buy all that expensive equipment.But instead sends a nurse to take Garfield to Dr. Whipple to train personally.
 
   
 
After the training, Whipple leaves the room while Garfield pouts in anger. Kittykins then walks into the room, revealing himself to be Harry. Harry explains to Garfield that he got the job, as it gets him paid in his weight in tuna. Garfield does some thinking about this.
The scene then goes to a tv studio with Garfield in a small room.Dr. Whipple shows up and begins his training on Garfield. First he puts him in a sound room strapped to a chair and makes him listens to random cat orders. Then he puts him to test with a robot dog that pushes him of the table every time he pushes it off the table, but garfield keeps fighting until the robot breaks.And finally he tests him out with food place out on a table, on one side of the table there is Whipple's food and on the other side there is catfood. And every time Garfield reaches the human food a safe drops on him and he keeps doing it because he likes it.

Garfield then starts misbehaving, much to the surprise of everyone. Garfield, after being captured by a stage hand, secretly grabs the microphone.
After all that training Whipple leaves the room and Garfield pouts in anger about him. Then Kittigins walks into the room who is revealed to be Harry the cat. Harry explains to Garfield that he got a job to be a perfect example of Dr. Whipple's training and gets paid in his weight in tuna.Garfield then does some thinking about this until the show goes on.
 
   
 
Backstage, Dr. Whipple becomes angry with Garfield trying to ruin his business. He then unwittingly reveals his true intentions on national television- he doesn't care if his training works or not, as he gets tons of money from the public (whom he refers to as idiots). After hearing this, the audience storms out as a result. Just as Whipple is about to threaten Garfield, Jon reclaims Garfield and takes him home. Whipple's nurse informs him that customers are cancelling orders and demanding refunds.
When it begins lots of people are there watching him including Jon and Odie. Dr. Whipple then brings Garfield out and at first Garfield seems well behaved which impresses the audience. Back home, Jon gives Garfield some lasagna to apologize for sending him to Whipple. After trying to watch Whipple's show, Garfield discovers that it was replaced with a game show featuring people dressed as large chickens, much to his delight.
Backstage Dr. Whipple his angry that Garfield is trying to ruin his business. But then thanks to Garfield he unwittingly reveals his plan on national television that he doesn't care if his training doesn't work or not unless he gets tons of money from the public and to top it all of he calls the public idiots. Everyone his angered by this including Jon. After whipple finds out about this he is so mad that his is about to get Garfield when Jon walks up and takes him home. Then Whipple's nurse shows up and tells him that the phone lines are jammed with customers cancelling orders and demanding refunds.
 
 
Back at home Jon gives Garfield some lasagna to apologize for sending him to Whipple. Garfield accepts but then asks for 8 more. Garfield then decides to watch Whipple's show but he is delighted to see that it was replace with a really mindless game show featuring people dressed as large chickens.

Extreme Housebreaking is the thirty-seventh episode from the first season of The Garfield Show.

Synopsis

After Garfield misbehaves in the house, he is taken away to a mental doctor named Dr. Whipple to straighten him up with extreme methods.
