"Don't call me Doc Boy!" - Doc's catchphrase.

Doc "Doc Boy" Arbuckle is Jon Arbuckle's older brother, who lives on a farm with his mother and father. He often fights with Jon, calling him a "cappuccino-sipping city slicker" and worse. He hates being called "Doc Boy", because he has already started wearing long pants.

Physical Appearance[]

Doc has rare black hair and white skin. He is usually seen wearing blue overalls, leather moccassins, and a green plaid shirt.

Personality[]

Doc is comparably immature to his younger brother. He is shown to have even worse fashion sense than Jon and is sometimes portrayed as significantly less intelligent. He also loves playing pranks on Jon. Unlike his brother, Doc likes mice.

Although generally ignorant of urban life, Doc does have one reason for remaining on the farm. Doc figures that, since he chose to stay on the farm while Jon moved to the city, he will inherit the farm — which he will then sell, earning him a huge profit and enabling him to retire young.[1]

In The Garfield Show, Doc has a farm of his own and is more serious and stern than he is in the strip. He does not get out much, and is very dedicated to his job. He still dislikes being called "Boy."

Trivia[]

  • This character is based on Jim Davis's real-life brother, David "Doc" Davis.
  • He has appeared 59 times in the comics, the 27th most.
  • Doc is Jon's only known sibling and is confirmed to be his only brother. In the TV shows, Jon is shown to have several nieces and nephews, indicating that Jon and Doc might have other siblings outside of each other.
  • Despite his dislike of the name "Doc Boy, he tends to like the name compared to other names Jon has given him.[2]
  • He still sleeps with a "blankie", as revealed in comic strips on November 29, 1984, and July 24, 2003. In the latter, Mrs. Arbuckle accidentally mailed Doc's blankie to Jon to where Jon had to mail it back when he got emotional.
  • Doc is more prominent on The Garfield Show compared to other Garfield projects.

Cultural References[]

  • The "boy" part of his name is likely a reference to John Boy from The Waltons.
