Depths of a Salesman (FRFlag Télé à chat) is the 31stUS/27thEU episode from the second season of The Garfield Show.

Synopsis[]

The All-Buying-Stuff Channel seems to have the power to hypnotize its viewers. This can be the only explanation behind Jon's crazy spending. He keeps buying useless and expensive things instead of buying what Garfield thinks is most important: food! But soon Garfield and Odie are lured in as well by the items its host is selling.

Plot[]

Garfield and Odie are in the kitchen waiting for lunch. They head into the living room and find Jon watching the All-Buying-Stuff channel. When a possum waxer is featured, he becomes interested in it and prepares to order it. Garfield stops Jon by blowing a tuba (which Jon had previously purchased from the channel). Garfield then takes Odie to the basement to show him more junk Jon bought from that channel (An automatic on-and-off machine, a 2 year supply of helium-filled gym socks, and a statue of Harlow P. Entwhistle, the inventor of the waterproof sponge).

Jon thanks Garfield for stopping him from buying something useless. Just as he is about to turn off the TV, he finds an offer for a portable cooling device that uses no electricity. Odie then sees a diamond-studded flea collar, followed by Garfield seeing a pizza-making device called the magnificent mozzarella machine. Jon then quickly orders all three items on the phone. After everyone gets their orders, they find that they were all ripped off. Jon's portable cooling device is revealed to be a giant ice cube, Odie's flea collar is tiny and actually meant to be worn by a flea, and Garfield's pizza machine merely shows the phone number for Vito's pizzeria. Angered by this, Garfield takes his machine and goes to the TV station to get a refund.

When he arrives, the guards laugh at the idea of getting a refund. Annoyed, Garfield walks right in past them. After they stop laughing and realize that Garfield got past them, they go after him, In the studio, the host finishes explaining a new product before asking if they were off the air yet. Mama Meany then enters, revealing himself to be the person behind the channel, and they begin talking about their scheme when the guards show up. When they tell him Garfield came for a refund, Mama Meany tells them to find Garfield and not to give him a refund. The guards eventually find Garfield and start chasing him (all three of them stop in the middle to play with bubble wrap). Garfield then goes into the stage area and overhears the host and Mama Meany talking about an audio appliance that can record and play any music or speech. The host will say that the appliance is digital and high-tech, but it is just an old tape recorder from a junkyard. They claim that their scheme is successful, as they believe the public is not smart enough to realize the trick. Unbeknownst to them, Garfield uses the device to record the conversation. When Garfield is spotted, the chase (and the play with bubble wrap) with the guards resumes.

After Garfield is caught, the guards bring him to Mama Meany just as the host is presenting the audio appliance on the All-Buying-Stuff channel. Mama Meany tells the guards to throw Garfield out without any refund. The host then plays the audio appliance, which plays back the conversation between him and Mama Meany on national television, exposing their scam to everyone watching. This surprises everyone besides Garfield. Saddened, Mama Meany tells Garfield that he will get a refund if he leaves. The fat cat accepts on one condition.

Back home, Jon explains to Garfield that the police received so many complaints about the All-Buying-Stuff channel, they launched an investigation, and Mama Meany may be legally required to give everyone refunds to avoid going to jail. Jon, who liked watching the channel, does not know what to do for fun now that the channel is off the air. Garfield then cheers him up by letting him and Odie play with the bubble wrap that Garfield got from the station.
