Coffee is a beverage that appears in many Garfield comics. Garfield and Jon can be seen drinking it in the morning. Coffee is sometimes also directly related to a gag. It first appeared on June 29, 1978.
Garfield loves coffee, so long as it isn't decaf. He has been seen chugging multiple cups of it and sometimes, various parts of his body tremble from the amount of caffeine in his body, from his teeth to his tail. Jon also enjoys coffee, though not to the extent that Garfield does, and Odie is occasionally seen drinking it, though this is rare. When he does drink it, though, be gets even more hyper than he usually is.

- 6/29/1978 Jon tells Garfield that he can't have coffee, claiming it will stunt his growth. After a moment of thought, he lets him have a cup.
- 1/2/1979 Jon asks Garfield what he wants for breakfast. Garfield asks for a Danish, a cup of coffee, and a paper, but Jon gives him a bowl of milk instead.
- 1/9/1979 Garfield is furious that Jon is making him wear a kitty sweater. He is demeaned, claiming he's not a person, but a cat, proving it by putting catnip in his coffee.
- 1/16/1979 Jon tells Garfield that cats can't drink coffee, but Garfield chugs it before he can finish. He then demands a refill. surprising Jon.
- 8/1/1979 Jon asks Garfield why can't he be normal as Garfield pours himself a cup of joe.
- 10/19/1979 Irma pours Jon a cup of coffee. Jon asks if it's hot, and she checks by putting her finger into it.
- 11/16/1979 Jon tells Irma that his coffee is strong. Irma wails dramatically.
- 12/10/1979 Garfield walks over to a cup of coffee, trembling rapidly until he drinks it.
- 1/7/1980 Garfield drinks a cup of coffee and is told too late that it is hot. Steam billows from his ears.
- 1/26/1980 Irma rolls past on roller skates, trying and failing to pour Jon a cup of coffee.
- 2/3/1980 On a cold morning, Garfield splashes coffee in his face, gurgles it, swallows it, and then gets into the warm cup.
- 2/6/1980 Jon hands Garfield sugar and tells him to help himself. Garfield dumps the whole bowl into a mug and is offered coffee with it.
