1981 (MCMLXXXI) was a common year that started on Thursday of the Gregorian calendar.

The comic strip undergoes a major change this year: on March 29, Sunday strips begin sporting a title block and "drop panel" (so named because some newspapers published the strip without it). The initial title block is "GARFIELD" in Korinna with a 3D effect and Garfield underneath, as well as multiple stars surrounding it; this continues to July 1985. Also, until March 1982, the drop panel is a "family shot" of Lyman, Odie, Garfield, and Jon.

The original prints of the title block showed it with a rainbow effect, while 21st-century reprints use different colors.

None of these changes make it to the books; in fact, the books will continue to publish Sunday strips without the title block until Garfield Chews the Fat. On the flipside, the Garfield Classics reprints retroactively assign title blocks to pre-March 29, 1981 Sunday strips.
