Overview

The Animal Scale, or simply Scale, is a minor recurring character in The Garfield Show, first appearing in the episode "High Scale." It is a sentient scale that often despises when Garfieldstands on it, due to how overweight he is. The animal scale is implied to be used to calculate the weight of animals, though it can weigh humans as well.

History[]

"High Scale"[]

When Jon takes Garfield to the vet, Liz shows Garfield her new animal scale to see his weight. Once he is placed on the scale, Garfield becomes jolted after the scale says rude things about him. Liz declares that he must lose two pounds before the end of the week, or be taken to a cat spa, where he will be placed on a long, strict diet. Jon then takes the scale home to help with Garfield's diet to lose two pounds. However, the scale says that Garfield now needs to lose three pounds after Garfield put ice cream on his leaf of lettuce.

Later, when Garfield sleeps, the scale also appears in his nightmare, where it constantly insults him and tells Garfield that he needs to lose more weight. Eventually, the scale becomes a spider-like monster with a deeper voice that chases after Garfield and insults him. Shortly after, the scale corners Garfield and tells him that all his friends are here (being several pieces of sentient food). The sentient food and the scale eventually make Garfield fall into a black void, causing him to wake up from his nightmare.

Back in reality, the scale, still says that Garfield needs to lose two pounds, even after he already did. Garfield loses his mind, figuring his nightmare is coming true. Jon, puzzled as to why this happened, eventually solves the problem by revealing that he mistakenly put the switch from the "Portly Pussycat" section to the "Pintsize Parakeet" section, as he planned to have Garfield lose two pounds the whole time. Garfield becomes angry and disgraced about this, making him scare Jon away.

Garfield then brings the scale to the zoo and makes an elephant stand on the scale, eventually breaking down the scale. Garfield then says that even though what he did was cruel, it was the price to pay for trying to make him exercise.

"The Six-Can Solution"[]

The scale is seen back in Jon's house, giving the weight of Jon and Liz. However, when Garfield gets on the scale, it screams in pain and tells Garfield to get off. Garfield gets mad at the scale and continues to stand on it.

Later in the episode, Garfield tortures the scale once again, as it screams in agony due to how heavy he is.

Trivia[]

  • The animal scale is very similar to RX-2 from the comics, as both scales insult Garfield's weight and feel immense pain whenever Garfield gets on them.
  • Ironically, the scale returning in a later episode contradicts the ending of "High Scale", when it was destroyed by being crushed by an elephant.
