(The episode begins above Jon’s neighborhood. As a couple of cars pass on the street, Garfield and Odie sit with each other on the former’s chair watching a pirate movie on TV)
Pirate: (on TV) Batten down the hatches, men! Prepare to submerge! A giant squid is attacking the ship!
Garfield: Hey, that’s what you get for going 20,000 leagues under the sea. Fella.
Odie: Yeah!
Garfield: Ah, adventure! (He stands up on his chair and rests his foot on the armrest. Odie looks at him) Intrigue! OK, so it’s a little damp down there, but to travel to the bottom of the ocean and battle sharks, (He clenches his fists)
Odie: Gasp! Whimpers (He is a lot less excited about that prospect than his fat feline friend is)
Garfield: (continuing) and whales and giant creatures with lots of arms! What could be better?
Odie: Huh? (Jon appears in the kitchen doorway)
Jon: Garfield! You want some donuts? (He holds a donut in his hand)
Garfield: Donuts. (He licks his lips) Good answer. (Jon steps back into the kitchen. His pets race in) Laughs
Odie: Mutters (They both stop in front of Jon and a pile of donut boxes. Odie wags his tail)
Jon: I picked up 12 dozen donuts for a party Liz is having at her office,
Garfield: Laughs (He licks his lips)
Jon: (continuing) but I think we can spare some. What kind would you like? (He holds up a list and begins reading off of it) We have razed donuts, glazed donuts, chocolate donuts, maple donuts, apple donuts, jelly donuts, powdered donuts, cinnamon donuts, strawberry donuts, crumb donuts, (The camera pans to the pets. Garfield has opened a box and he and Odie gaze at the donuts. Garfield, seeing Odie eye the donuts, shoots the pup a dirty look. Odie grins innocently, hoping to get some, but Garfield pulls them away. Odie hops to Garfield’s other side, but the fat cat pulls them away. They do this a couple more times as Jon finishes reading the list of donut varieties) sour cream donuts, sugar donuts, cake donuts, blueberry donuts, custard donuts, filled donuts, peanut butter donuts, lemon donuts, and crullers.
Garfield: (while looking at the donuts) OK, I've made up my mind. Oh, look Odie, (He and Odie run out of the kitchen. Garfield holds all the boxes in his paws) we have razed donuts, glazed donuts, chocolate donuts, maple donuts, (The pets run around the table) apple donuts, JELLY donuts, powdered donuts, cinnamon donuts, strawberry donuts, crumb donuts, sour cream donuts, (They break toward the front door) sugar donuts, CAKE donuts, blueberry donuts, custard donuts, filled donuts, peanut butter donuts… (Odie runs toward the camera as they burst outside with their loot)
(Back in the kitchen, Jon calls Liz to inform her of the donut crisis)
Jon: I’ll be a little late getting there, Liz. (A garbled voice talks on the other end of the phone) Yeah, right. I have to stop at the donut shop again. (He sticks his head into the living room) I know, I know. (He steps toward the chair and looks around. Garfield had left the TV on the pirate movie, and Jon notices)
Pirate: (on TV) Be careful, men! The giant squid could attack at any minute!
(In her office, Liz takes the temperature of a goldfish)
Liz: Giant squid? Oh, you’re watching that movie on Channel 5. (She sticks the thermometer in and the fish closes its mouth on it)
Jon: (on the phone) Yeah. I guess we’re lucky WE don’t have creatures like that around.
Liz: We might. (Back at the house, Jon looks up the stairs for his cat)
Jon: Garfield! (In her office, Liz sits at her computer)
Liz: There are scientists who claim that giant squid or octopi may be living in our city sewers. (Jon looks in the bathroom, out the window)
Jon: Giant squid in the sewers? That’s impossible! (He steps toward the window and looks nervously at a manhole cover in the street) I hope.
(Meanwhile, the Flabby Tabby and Big-hearted Beagle have reached the park with their bounty)
Garfield and Odie: Pant (They run next to a tree and stop, agreeing to divvy up the donuts. Garfield sets the boxes on the grass)
Garfield: Alright, puppo, time to divide these up. (He takes a deep breath as he collects himself) Well, as we all know, there are two parts (He holds up two fingers) to every donut: (The camera focuses on Garfield) that undesirable messy cake and sugar part, (He inhales sharply) and that delicious non-fattening part they call a hole! (He says this like a salesman, trying to get Odie to bite on his ploy, while making the OK symbol with his paw)
Odie: Huh? (He tilts his head in confusion) Uh-huuuuh. (His eyes narrow and he glares suspiciously at his friend)
Garfield: So I'll take the yucky donut part and you (He points at Odie, who is still staring at him with narrowed eyes) can have… (In a surprise move for him, Odie grabs all the boxes and takes off with them. Garfield, who had clearly underestimated the pooch, is caught off-guard by Odie’s sudden action) Hey! Wait! (Odie does not listen. He takes off for the exit) Come back here with my razed donuts,
Odie: Snickers (It must be nice to finally get back at Garfield)
Garfield: (continuing) my glazed donuts, (He takes off after the pup) my chocolate donuts, my maple donuts…! (The chase continues into the sidewalk)
Odie: Pants (Unbeknownst to Odie, the top box in the stack falls off and its contents spill out onto the ground in front of Garfield, who abruptly stops)
Garfield: My razed donuts! Or are those my glazed donuts? (He looks around at the donuts) It’s OK, they’re still edible! (He wiggles his fingers and reaches for one, but a pigeon swipes the one he was going for) Doh! Wha-? (A flock of pigeons takes each of the donuts away, one by one, leaving Garfield with nothing but a shocked expression. He addresses the audience and points behind him with his thumb) I think those were my bird seed donuts. (He resumes the chase)
Odie: Mutters
(Nearby, Eddie Gourmand is at a little girl’s lemonade stand)
Eddie Gourmand: Sorry, little girl, I have a rule: (He points up) I only drink lemonade when I have it with a cinnamon donut. (At that moment, Odie runs by, the leaning tower of pastry still in his paws)
Odie: Pants (Another box falls off the top and bounces into Eddie’s hand. Garfield zips up as the food critic opens the box to see what is inside)
Eddie Gourmand: Woo! Now that’s service! (He eats the contents as Garfield can only watch helplessly. He grips his head in horror)
Garfield: I’m losing precious donuts! (He takes off after his canine companion while Eddie gets some lemonade)
Eddie Gourmand: Mm! Delicious! I won’t report you to the board of health this time. (The girl just blinks in confusion)
(Meanwhile, Garfield runs down the hill, keeping his head on a swivel on the lookout for either the donuts, or Odie)
Garfield: Which way did he go? I’m down to 10 dozen! Pants (As he hustles down the hill, a group of mice appear from behind a wall, each one riding on a donut as if they were unicycles) Wha? (Garfield stops and glances behind him. He runs back up the hill) Pants (He watches the last of the mice roll away and resumes his hunt for the pooch) Correction: NINE dozen! I gotta find him before I'm the one (He turns to the viewers) who gets stuck with the holes! Pants (He hurries down the hill and passes Odie, who is hiding between a couple of buildings nearby)
Odie: Snickers Mutters (He watches as Garfield passes, only for him to leap on the fence in front of Odie)
Garfield: Donut thief! (He points at Odie and lunges at him. Odie dodges, but Garfield makes a quick recovery. He leaps at Odie again, this time tackling him and causing the pup to lose his grip on the donuts. They watch as the donuts fly through the air and land on the hood of a passing car)
Odie: Mutter (He covers his eyes with his ears for a moment, and then watches with Garfield as the donuts are carried off)
Garfield: My donuts! (The boxes fall off the car and spill out onto the street. All 108 donuts roll or bounce down the hill. Garfield gets on Odie, riding him like a horse) YAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH! (Odie rears back and gallops after the bakery items, complete with horse sound effects) Pant! They’re getting away! After them! (He points at the donuts)
Odie: Pants
Garfield: (to the viewers) I hate fast food! (The donuts roll down the hill) My strawberry donuts! My sour cream donuts! My filled-but-I-don’t-know-with-what donuts!
Odie: Howl! Wheezes (He’s probably getting tired from the constant running, made more difficult because he’s carrying Garfield. The donuts roll into the path of a man using a hose. They get caught up in the hose’s spray and are washed down the street)
Garfield: (pointing) They’re heading for the street! (They go with the flow into an open sewer grate) Oh! No! (Garfield reaches for one, but it’s too late. Odie flops on his stomach above the grate, but neither he nor Garfield is able to recover a single donut) Ow! (The last of the 108 donuts disappear into the darkness of the sewer) We’re too late! (Garfield holds his paw to his head in sorrow. Odie watches) A sight that makes my heart sink (His voice gets sorrowful) to say nothing of my blood sugar!
Odie: Awwwwwww! (He sits down and looks sadly into the abyss. Garfield looks at him and suddenly gets angry)
Garfield: Odie, (He points at the pup) this is your fault!
Odie: Me? (He puts his paws on his stomach)
Garfield: Yes! (He steps toward Odie and points accusingly at him)
Odie: Oh…
Garfield: (continuing, he gestures toward the grate) If you had just let me eat all the donuts, (He shakes his legs and holds his arms out) I would’ve been able to eat all the donuts! (He turns to Odie) I should make you
Odie: Huh?
Garfield: (continuing, he points at the sewer) go down in the sewer and get them! (He storms away. Odie watches him leave, but remains next to the open grate. He hears something from inside)
Odie: Hmm? (He looks down into the depths. A giant tentacle reaches up and grabs the poor pooch, and he barks frantically for help) Bark! Bark! Bark! Bark! Bark! Bark! (The tentacle waves him around. Garfield, who had not gotten too far, hears Odie’s cries for help)
Garfield: Ah, now don’t try to make up to me. (He glances behind him, but doesn’t turn around. He continues walking away)
Odie: (panicked) Bark! Bark! Bark! Bark! Bark! Bark! Bark! (The tentacle waves him around. Garfield, who is still furious with Odie, turns around and sees his friend in peril)
Garfield: (pointing) So what if a giant (He wags his finger at Odie) slimy tentacle is trying to pull you (He clenches his fist) down into the sewer? I lost my donuts! (You’re about to lose your friend, Garfield. Luckily for Odie, the fat cat realizes this and his anger quickly cools off to a look of concern for the pup)
Odie: HOWWWWWWWWLLLLLL! (Garfield blinks in amazement, then runs at the tentacle)
Garfield: Hold on, Odie! (I think if he could, he would let go)
Odie: (frenzied) Bark! Bark! Bark! Bark! Bark! Bark! (The tentacle sucks him into the sewer. Garfield arrives just in time to grab Odie’s ear)
Garfield: Strains (He tries pulling Odie back up onto the surface and is partially successful in doing so, but after getting Odie’s head out, the Tubby Tabby loses his grip and falls backwards)
Odie: Mutters Whimpers (Garfield is partially successful in freeing the pup, but after getting Odie’s head out, the Tubby Tabby loses his grip and falls backwards) Bye-bye… (Garfield sits up as Odie gives his best friend a wave good-bye before the tentacle yanks him back under) OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH NOOOOOOO! (Garfield grabs the edge of the grate and calls out to his friend)
Garfield: Don’t worry, Odie! I’ll save you! I’ll find a way to get you outta there! I won’t abandon you! (He disappears, and reappears a second later) And while you’re down there, keep an eye open for my donuts! (He disappears from the mouth of the grate and looks around him) Well, looks like I don’t have any choice. I’ve got to go in after him. (He takes off)
(The camera shifts to a nearby manhole cover. Garfield runs up to it and stands beside it)
Garfield: If I’m not out by the end of the show, (The camera pans up to reveal more of the Tubby Tabby) it’s been nice knowing ya. (The camera switches to the sewer. A rat runs along the ground as Garfield lifts the cover and falls on his butt with a comical squeak) Grunt! Whoo. (He gets up and rubs his rear) I'd better watch my step. I don’t wanna fall into the (Right on cue, he falls into the…) WATER! (He grabs the edge of the pathway and pulls himself up, completely soaked) Odie? (His voice echoes as he calls for his friend, and would continue to do so for a little while longer. He looks around, but can see no trace of the pup) Oooo-dieeee? (He starts walking, making squishy sounds with each step, and then breaks into a run) Pants Ooooo-dieeeee! Not here, not there, not anywhere! (He stops, as the path he is on has led to another tunnel. He looks to his left…) Gasp! (and then his right.) Doh! (He sprints to his right) Pants (He runs on the other side of the tunnel, around a corner, and then in another tunnel. He passes a rat sitting on a ladder and he rounds another corner, starting to lose his breath from all the running. Something bubbles in the water beneath him, but he is too preoccupied in finding his friend to notice. He eventually stops) It’s no use. (He hangs his head in sorrow and addresses the audience) I’ll never see my friend Odie again. He was such a good pup! (As Garfield mourns his lost friend–one of the rare instances when he admits that he and Odie are friends–a tentacle rises from the water next to him) A little moist around the tongue, (He makes the OK sign with his paw) but good. (He hangs his head and looks down at the ground. At that moment, the tentacle next to him taps his shoulder) Yes? (He turns to look at the tentacle and is instantly grabbed) YAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! (He kicks his feet and shakes his head, struggling to free himself from the grip of the giant squid. In another tentacle, Odie also tries–unsuccessfully–to escape) AAHHH! HOOO! EEEE! NYOOWWWWW! (The squid looks at both of them)
Giant Squid: Growl! Snarl!
Garfield: Oh, boy! (He points at the squid) Hey you oversized calamari, (At first he sounds angry, but then he sounds terrified) put us down!
Giant Squid: BLEECH! (It conks the pets together, dazing them both)
Odie: Moan…whimper
Garfield: YAAAAHHHHH! (The squid uses its free tentacles to push itself down the sewer) YAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Odie: HOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWLLLLLLLLLL! Whimpers (Garfield tries punching the squid, and that does literally nothing)
Garfield: Grunts It’s no use, Odie! We’re its prisoners!
Odie: Awwww…
Garfield: Oh, I hope it doesn’t go on a rampage through the city. (The squid turns and floats down a different tunnel, a sewer worker watches from a distance, trembling)
(Meanwhile, at Liz’s office, she, Jon, and a few other people–Jim Davis included–watch the Anchorman give a report on TV)
Anchorman: This just in: a giant squid in the sewers is going on a rampage through the city!
People: Gasp! (The penguin Liz was examining also gasps. The TV shows the squid tapping Vito on the shoulder. When he turns to look, the squid knocks the pizza out of his hands and catches it)
Anchorman: We have reports from all over!
People: Ewww! (The TV then shows the squid throwing letters out of Herman Post’s mailbag)
Anchorman: No one is safe from its slimy tentacles. (The TV cuts back to the reporter) Sewer workers reported seeing the squid clutching an overweight orange cat and a puppy with a long tongue.
Jon: Garfield!
Liz: And Odie!
Jon and Liz: Whimper (They hold hands and tremble in fear)
(Not long after, Jon and Liz race down the street, Jon holding Liz’s hand and practically forcing her along)
Jon: Pants
Liz: Jon, where are we going?
Jon: Where else? To the sewer! (He points at a manhole)
(Meanwhile, the squid has both the pets in its grip. The donuts they lost sit nearby, but they are too terrified to notice)
Odie: Whimpers (The squid’s eyes narrow)
Giant Squid: Grrrrrr! (It’s eyes pop open wide)
Garfield: Oh! Pants I know that look! (He points at the squid) It’s a lot like the one I have when I desperately need lasagna!
Giant Squid: Roar!
Odie: Whimpers (Garfield looks at his puppy pal)
Garfield: Looks like Odie’s about to be dinner, and I’ll probably be dessert!
Odie: Howl! Cries (He tries to break free, but his arms are also stuck in the squid’s grasp and he can barely move. It is at this point that the fat cat notices the donuts on the ground next to them)
Garfield: What a time to finally find my donuts. Donuts! (A light bulb goes off in the cat’s head. He reaches for the donuts) Strains (He grabs one and looks at it longingly. No doubt he wants to eat it, but then he notices his pooch pal) Gasp! (Odie struggles to break free, about to be eaten by the squid. The pup kicks his legs and tries closing the squid’s mouth with his feet. Garfield makes a noble sacrifice for the pup) Here, try one of these, Slimy! (He holds the donut in front of him)
Odie: Huh? (Garfield dangles the donut)
Giant Squid: Roar! (The cat tosses it into the squid’s mouth. The squid chews it, and its eyes snap open. It likes the taste)
Odie: Howl! (The squid pulls him and Garfield closer, when the fat cat points out the other donuts)
Garfield: Here, try a razed donut, (Garfield points and the squid looks at the donuts on the path nearby) and a glazed donut, (The squid uses one of its free tentacles and starts eating the donuts) and a chocolate donut, and a maple donut! (The squid puts the pets down on the other path in favor of the donuts, which are immediately shoveled into its mouth)
Giant Squid: Chewing noises
Garfield and Odie: Huh? (They look at each other, and then back to the squid)
Odie: Confused mutters (He gestures to the squid and looks at his fat feline friend)
Garfield: (pointing up) I KNOW we have to do something about him! (They look at each other) Let’s see what that valve does! (Odie steps back and Garfield races past him to a valve nearby)
Garfield and Odie: Pant (Garfield reaches the valve first and tries twisting it. He puts his feet on the bottom for more leverage, wiggling his toes as he tries again, but it won’t budge)
Garfield: (while hopping in place) Odie, give me a paw!
Odie: Uh-huh! (Without hesitation, the loyal pup joins the Flabby Tabby in turning the knob. The Giant Squid continues eating donuts while the pets turn the valve behind it)
Giant Squid: Chewing noises
Garfield and Odie: Strain (They are able to make some progress as they are turning around the valve, but it is slow going as they struggle to move it. The squid submerges, swims toward the cat and dog duo, and leaps from the water into the air, making itself even more imposing than it was before)
Giant Squid: Roar!
Odie: YAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH! (Just in time, the valve they were turning opens a door next to them, flushing the water and the squid away, albeit not without a fight from the squid. It grabs the top of the door with one tentacle and tries gripping the path with another)
Garfield: Sigh.
Odie: Hmm? (The force of the water is too much for the squid and it is sucked away. It waves a tentacle at the pets, and they wave back as it disappears down another pipe) Mutters (Garfield and Odie collapse on their backs, exhausted from the day’s events)
Garfield: He won’t stop until he hits the ocean, at least!
Odie: Uh-huh.
Garfield: C’mon! (He gets up) Let’s find our way out of this place! (Odie nods) It smells like a sewer! (Garfield holds his nose in disgust)
Odie: Yeah! (With his powerful nose, he doesn’t need reminding)
(On the surface, it is now nighttime. Jon struggles to lift a manhole cover using a broom handle as a lever. Liz reads the news on her phone next to him)
Liz: It says here, (She points at her phone and reads) “The navy reports the giant squid has reached the ocean and is still going.” (The manhole cover pops free. Jon falls over onto his back, and the cover hits him in the face)
Jon: Oof! (He sits up, holding the cover next to his head) OK, it’s gone, (He sets it aside) but where are Garfield and Odie? (At that moment, his pets appear out of the manhole, looking much cleaner than before)
Garfield: You rang?
Odie: Ta-da!
(Later that night, Jon drives himself and his pets home)
Jon: You guys got rid of the giant squid!
Odie: Bark! Bark! (He is quite enthusiastic about being rid if the squid) Pants
Jon: You’re a hero, Garfield! (He turns around to see the Tubby Tabby in the backseat, but instead of pride or happiness, he is rather downcast) Why do you look so dejected? (Garfield is a back to his dirty sewer self from moments ago)
Garfield: Well being a hero is nice, saving the city’s OK, (He flops back in his seat) but I didn’t get any razed donuts. I didn’t get any glazed donuts. I didn’t get any chocolate donuts. I didn’t get any maple donuts. I didn’t get any apple donuts. I didn’t get any jelly donuts. Didn’t get any, didn’t get any… (His voice trails off as Jon drives away. On the bright side, he got his best friend back, and that is priceless)
(Some other place, at some other time–as it is now daytime–a hot dog vendor gives a hot dog to a little girl and her mother near the sea when the squid raises its tentacles above the cart)
Giant Squid: Gurgles (The girl sees it and reacts accordingly)
Little Girl: AHH! (The vendor and the little girl's mother flee, dropping the hot dog on the ground)
People: AAAAHHHHH! (The squid grabs the hot dog cart, drags it underwater, and then grabs the last hot dog on the ground, ending this episode)
THE END
