People criticize this movie because it's not true to the Garfield formula.. really?
Now, you are allowed to have your own opinion about the movie, but i think people criticize it for the stupidest reasons ever.
Did people really except for the Garfield movie to be a 90 minute movie about this fat, lazy, egoistical cat who kicks Odie off the table, pranks Jon, and eats and sleeps all day.. HOW exactly would that work?
Even Garfield and Friends, and the Garfield Show, despite being a few minutes long, they do not always follow the Garfield formula. Because, let's be honest, if Garfield did nothing but eat, sleep, or be rude towards Jon, or Odie, of course he would be a boring and unlikable protagonist. That's why in most episodes, Garfield is shown to have a hidden heart of gold, as he is shown to help people (without excepting a reward, he does it because it's the right thing to do). An example is Binky Goes Bad.
He is also a perfect mix of a cynical old man and a happy kid. He is cynical at worst, but he is often shown to be happy, and heck, the theme song starts with him dancing and having a good time! Yeah, he does more than just eating or sleeping. He refuses to exercise, but when you think about it, he runs and walks a lot in this series. He does involuntarily. One episode had him run away from home, run in a desert and climb up a mountain just to get away from Binky. But because of cartoon logic, Binky showed up.
Garfield has more depth than just being a lazy cat who eats and sleeps all day.
